Guest Director -
Site-specific Shakespeare

I was guest director for the CMT course's site-specific Shakespeare project on Yuri Roodner's extraordinary course.

Our production of Macbeth began in a non-descript field in Essex before descending 80 feet below ground to the claustrophobic rooms of a decommissioned secret nuclear bunker. This culminated in a beheading in the bunker's 120m blast tunnel

FOURTH MONKEY

  • Shakespeare tutor

I I first went to Fourth Monkey to guest direct first-year production of Hamlet. Fourth Monkey centres its training around the notion of 'play' and their innovative Artistic Director Steve Green allowed me to do just that with a unique project that tried to emulate the advantages of  cue-scripting.

I took two separate groups and told them that we were to perform two productions of Hamlet based on two different stimuli and to be set in two different worlds. The groups were under the impression that we would simply compare the two productions, however instead of presenting it as rehearsed, we mixed the casts. So everyone was working with the 'wrong' scene partner, this created a heightened need to listen and react, the students' learnt a very visceral lesson at the heart of our craft.

After that I became Head of Acting and Head of the Two Year course. This position was cut short by Covid.
